Beautiful
Aurora by Philip Beesley Architect Inc.
My favourite installation of the night, Aurora by Philip Beesley Architect Inc.
So beautiful to look at…looking up and standing under it was just as beautiful as standing above it on the second floor of the Music Conservatory and looking down upon it. A soft humming sound, almost like wind blowing played around the installation, creating a dreamy atmosphere.
Crossings by The OpenEnded Group at Nuit Blanche.
Images of walking figures were projected onto the Royal Ontario Museum.
Figures differed in size, and would eventually disappear.
Taking a look at the art that was part of El Anatsui at the Royal Ontario Museum.
It focused on African art, made out of recycled goods. This piece here was made out of a bunch of old cardboard containers, turned into mini boxes.
Yesterday evening (and this morning)
was awesome.
I had the chance to go see Swans in concert, and then afterwards I looked around at some of the art at Nuit Blanche.
Swans was playing with Baby Dee, a group consisting of a violinist, cello player, and harp player. The only way I can describe their music is ‘freak folk’. The harp player was pretty eccentric, quite the character haha. Nonetheless, they were pretty engaging to watch.
Swans was absolutely amazing, one of the loudest performances I’ve been to so far. They opened with about 20 minutes of pure noise before finally taking the stage and performing the songs. They were really high energy, so intense. It was just so LOUD and you could really feel the music. For their encore, they played an outro of pure noise. They ended up playing for around 2 hours! I think Swans has a very interesting style, and I’m really glad that I went to the show.
When the show ended (which was around 1:15 am), I met up with a friend to go take a look at some of the art at Nuit Blanche. For those of you who don’t know, it’s an all-night art event where you get to see all different kinds of art- visual art, performance art, installations, music, etc. Th art is spread out in 3 zones, all across downtown Toronto. I didn’t get to see much this year- but I did see some really cool things. I was dissapointed that I didn’t get to see this installation called Interactive Landscape Dune, that would be in a train station that hasn’t been used for years (the lineup went on for about 2 blocks, so apparently it would have been about an 1hr-2 hrs of a wait). Anyways, I ended up seeing the following things:
Yeah, so I didn’t get to see that much. My friend had to go home early and I didn’t want to stay out late by myself. But I did end up getting home around 5 am and being dead tired >.>
My favourite thing at Nuit Blanche by far was Aurora. It was an absolutely stunning installation, really mesmerizing to look at. It’s one of those things that you have a hard time taking your eyes off!
All in all, it was a great night. How can you go wrong with a night of art and music? :)
Nuit Blanche and Swans concert tonight
looks like it’s going to be an epic night
art + music = perfect
Nuit Blanche

Literally translating to ‘White Night’, Nuit Blanche is a celebration of contemporary art. The one in Toronto was yesterday, going for about 12 hours- I lasted until about 4am and then I was pretty much dead (the event goes from about 7pm to 7 am the next day).
There are lots of things to see, ranging from installations, to galleries, to performance art.
I had a lot of fun this year, even though I didn’t get to see everything I would have liked to.
Oh yeah there are Nuit Blanches around the world in other places too!
